Wants Sallins bypass project speeded up

SALLINS, 30 June 2002: by Trish Whelan. Right now it may be only a line on a map in the Development Plan, but a by-pass for Sallins came a step closer last week with agreement by the Naas Area Committee of Kildare County Council to use development levies to fund the design stage of the road.

The line of the route has already been agreed. Two bridges will be involved along the proposed route which will start from the White City on the Naas side of Sallins. It will take all heavy traffic out of the village making it safer for children.

Cllr Anthony Lawlor had put down a notice of motion asking that the by-pass commence immediately as it is vital for Sallins. He said landowners along the route want to develop their land but this depends on it being opened up by the new route. "I'll push this all the way," he added.

Cllr Lawlor said a developer is willing to design and build the road. "The developer wants it, the local people and local representatives want it. It looks as if the only ones who don't want it are the County Council who don't have the staff to design it," he said.

He asked if there would be a problem with getting in outside consultants with the design process.

He was backed by Cllr Timmy Conway who said if ‘we’re to wait for sufficient staff in the Roads Design Department to do the design work, it won’t start for another four years’.

Officials are to come back next month with further information.
