Roy does his debut solo gig to critical acclaim

KILCULLEN, 10 October: by Brian Byrne. Locally well-known Kilcullen musician Roy Thompson had his first solo gig last weekend when he appeared as the evening's entertainment in The Spout pub.

"After 20 years of playing guitar in my bedroom, I thought it was time I came out to the public," he quipped as he gave the audience a mixture of blues and contemporary ballads, including a number of his own compositions - 'Hell Freezes Over' and 'I Hope You Sleep at Night' being among these.

Those listening showed their appreciation strongly of Roy's performance, and they were promised there would be return gigs. Roy is also down to play support to a number of established singers at other hostelries in the county.

Apart from being an accomplished guitarist - he favours Martins - and singer, often heard at informal sessions around Kilcullen and in Kildare town, Roy has also appeared in many productions with the Kilcullen Drama Group. For his 'day job' he is a Duchas Wildlife Ranger, and he writes a nature column in Kilcullen's community magazine, The Bridge'.
