Newbridge Rotary will help raise 80m euros against polio

NEWBRIDGE, 29 June 2002: by Brian Byrne. Newbridge Rotary Club will continue fundraising activities to help in the global fight against polio, even though Europe was last week declared polio-free by the World Health Organisation.

“The fight is almost won, but not quite yet,” the Newbridge club’s PRO Michael Mullaly said this weekend. “A major effort is now underway by Rotary International to raise a further 80 million euros a year, so that in 2005 polio will be eliminated worldwide.”

Since 1985, Rotary clubs throughout the world have contributed over 462 billion euros for the protection of some 2 billion children against polio in 122 countries.

“The Rotary Club of Newbridge has been part of that crusade since its inauguration in 1990,” says Michael Mullaly. “We’re very conscious of the great support we receive from individuals, families and businesses, and most of these funds are disbursed locally and nationally."
