Wants patriot remembered

NAAS, 27 October 2002: Cllr Pat McCarthy says the memory of the patriot John Devoy should continue to be commemorated in the new development of the Civic Offices on the site of the old Devoy Barracks (above).

Mayor Timmy Conway has suggested that Naas Town Council should seek the return of the cannon, known as the Russian gun, from the army.

The cannon had been regarded as a local landmark and was situated beside the flagpole near the front railings of the former Devoy Barracks.

With the formal closure of the Barracks, the big gun was removed to The Curragh by the Dept of Defence.

The gun was a war trophy brought back by the British army from the Crimean campaign.
