Objects to ALDI store proposal

08 July 2003: A councillor's belief that a proposed ALDI discount store building 'is of poor quality' has led to him objecting to a planning application by the store chain for a premises in Maynooth.

Cllr John McGinley says the application for a 1,144 sq m store next to the Kavanaghs Mill site on the Kilcock Road is 'inappropriate for this prime location'.

"This is the gateway to Maynooth from Kilcock with NUI Maynooth on one side of the road and the historical St Patrick's College on the other side," he says. "It is therefore essential that any building at this location must be of a very high quality and certainly not the standard ALDI design. There is already a fine proposal for the Mill location and a decision on it is awaited from An Bord Pleanala.
