Former Caragh man wins major media award

CARAGH, 27 June 2001: by Bill Trapman. Nigel Gordon, formerly of Donore, Caragh, Naas, and now living in Carlow, has won one of the media industry’s most coveted awards at PROMAX & BDA 2001 held last weekend at Miami Beach Florida. Last Friday night Nigel was awarded a Gold Award in the Television Station Children’s Programme Promotion category for a Bear in the Big Blue House promo which he made to promote the enormously popular children's TV programme which is screened on Den 2.

Nigel, a Senior RTE TV Promotions Director was recently promoted to Assistant Head of the Promotions Department at RTE. He joined RTE in June 1997, having formerly worked for many years as Head of Production at local radio station CKR FM. The TV Promotions Department at RTE is responsible for promoting TV programmes on RTE One and Network 2, they make promotional ads or trailers which are screened on the two TV stations promoting their forthcoming programmes.

From June 20-23, Miami Beach Convention Centre, Florida was the setting for PROMAX & BDA 2001 - the world's largest gathering of promotion, marketing and design professionals in TV, digital media and radio. It’s the world's largest educative forum in the promotion, marketing and design industry. This US conference has attracted powerful and influential speakers like Michael Eisner, Ted Turner, Tom Freston, Oprah Winfrey, and Barry Diller. Outstanding creative figures like Maya Angelou, Spike Lee, Peter Max, John Leguizamo, and Sir George Martin have inspired and enthused thousands of attendees. Delegates were there last weekend to track the latest trends and identify the hottest developments in techniques of their industry, to connect with other creative minds and to see the PROMAX&BDA Awards for creative professionals in promotion, marketing and design.

The PROMAX Awards are recognised around the globe as the highest accolade for promotion and marketing professionals working in today's electronic media. These awards are the equivalent to an Oscar in the Film industry. The Gold Award itself is a muse type statue similar in fact to the familiar Oscar award. The PROMAX Awards are presented to companies and individuals whose work is judged by a panel of promotion and marketing experts and record number of 5,200 entries were received for this year’s competition. Television Stations from all around the world including Fox TV, ABC, Walt Disney Television, Discovery Networks, CBS Television Network, WB Television Network, Sky, BBC, S4C, Sat 1 Germany, Network Nine Australia, Channel Nine and Carlton Television to name but a few, were competing for these prestigious awards.

Unfortunately Nigel was unable to attend the Conference in Miami and pick up his award in person due to work commitments. The Head of RTE’s TV Promotions Department, Jim Booth, received the award on Nigel’s behalf. Jim himself also scooped a Gold Award for his RTE Autumn Launch promo which was aired last year and a Silver Award for a Late Late Show Promo. Three other Silver Awards were won by two other colleagues in RTE Promos Department for RTE One 'Only on One' Promo, a Ballykissangel Promo and a promo made to promote RTE’s coverage of the Olympics.
