Narraghmore Pipe Band wins in World Championships

NARRAGHMORE, 14 August 2002: by Martin Dempsey. Lord Edward's Own Narraghmore Pipe Band continued its winning form on Saturday 10 August by taking first place in its grade at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow.

They shared their victory with the MacNaughton's Vale Of Atholl Pipe Band, who ended up with the same number of points from the piping, drumming and ensemble judges.

In 1999 Narraghmore won the World Championships in Grade 3B and were upgraded to Grade 3A. Their current win, along with other victories this year may see them upgraded to Grade 2 for next season.

The band won the Scottish Championships in Dumbarton and the Malahide Piping & Drumming Festival in May; came 3rd in the All Ireland Championships in Kilkenny and 4th in the British Championships in Ayr in July.

The band was recently awarded the Irish Pipe Band Association Champion Of Champions title for 2002 in Grade 3A and will compete in their final contest of the year - the Ulster Championships in Derry on 24 August.

This is the highest level the band has ever competed at and is a recognition of the dedication of the players and committee over many years. The band has had a lot of enquiries recently from pipers and drummers interested in joining, some of whom played in the band previously.

Anyone interested in joining the band or registering for the limited number of places still available in its piping and drumming beginners classes starting in September should contact the band immediately. Phone 045 521190. Fax 045 521198. Email mdassociates@eircom.net.
