Children's free healthcare call agreed

NAAS, 30 July 2002: by Brian Byrne. Three motions passed unanimously at Naas Town Council’s July meeting included one from Cllr Charlie Byrne asking that all children should have free medical treatment up to the age of seven.

Cllr Byrne’s original motion had suggested the age of five, but in the discussion several councillors agreed it should be higher. Cllr Byrne had raised the issue because of his concerns that many parents might delay bringing their children to a doctor because they’d be charged up to 40 euros a time.

Councillors requested that the motion be circulated to other local authorities, with a view to having it made a national issue.

A field behind the Church of the Irish Martyrs at Ballycane (above) will be used on a temporary basis for training youngsters by the GAA, following the unanimous approval of a motion by Cllr Willie Callaghan to this effect.

Cllr Callaghan said that up to 500 young people were trained every week by the organisation, but the property where it was currently done will soon no longer be available.

Another motion by Cllr Callaghan that the council should explore with Kildare County Council the possibility of building a second playground for Naas at the Swimming Pool Field during the reconstruction of the pool.

During the discussion, Cllr Seamie Moore suggested that a skateboard arena be included in the facilities at the site.
