Decision on new community school site 'in November'

NAAS, 18 October 2002: A decision on the provision of a new St Patrick’s Community College in Naas will be made by mid-November, according to school principal Tom Keegan. Speaking at the college’s recent Open Day, he said the choice is still between the existing site of 8 acres or a greenfield site of 9.6 acres, of which a proposed site at Sallins Road ‘is just one’.

The decision has been delayed for some considerable time because of a difference of opinion between a developer who has offered a site at Sallins Road in treturn for the existing school site, and the Department of Education & Science, on the value of ‘exchange’ proposals.

The building will contain all the services of a modern Community School with the full range of services including a full size Sports Hall. It will have very good green spaces for pitches.

Tom Keegan said it would be cheaper to build on a new greenfield site than to refurbish the existing school. He said that a ‘fast-track’ approach agreed by all parties would mean a build time of between 30 and 36 months.
