Council being asked to help with 'hardship' refuse charges

NAAS, 12 April 2002: by Brian Byrne. Naas Town Council is being asked to provide funding for ‘hardship’ cases in relation to refuse collection charges.

In a motion before the council at next week’s April meeting, Cllr Pat McCarthy says the authority can use powers under Public Health Act 1878 and the Local Government Act 1991 to give assistance ‘in money kind’ to persons to promote environmental interests of the community.

He notes that hardship is caused to certain categories of Social Welfare recipients by the present high charges for refuse collection.

Council officials have said in the past that they are legally prevented from giving waivers to anyone in relation to refuse charges.
