NAAS, 4 October: by Brian Byrne & Trish Whelan. A £100,000 refurbishment of the Naas Scout Den was celebrated last Sunday when the den was officially opened by the Chief Scout of CSI, Peter Dixon. The den is located in a 75-year-old British Legion building which has been a scout den for almost 30 years.

At the event, Unit Leader Jo Coy thanked all those who had supported the refurbishment, including Naas UDC and Kildare County Council, Naas Credit Union and other commercial sponsors. Naas-based graphic artist Sean Hanrahan designed and installed a number of scout crests in the building.

The Chief Scout said 'an investment in scouting is an investment in the citizens of tomorrow' and said that the 4th Kildare Unit had managed a 'wonderful achievement which would be the envy of many towns in Ireland'. Naas UDC Cathaoirleach Willie Callaghan said other groups and organisations could learn much from how the Naas scoits had developed their facilities.

The refurbished den was blessed by Scout Chaplain Fr Ruairi O'Domhnaill and Presbyterian Minister Rev Colin Gamble. The Chief Scout also planted an oak tree in the grounds of the den to mark the occasion.

Scout leaders Jo Coy and Frank Jennings proudly display the original 1965 flag of the Naas Unit, given by Mrs Ellis from St Corban's Lane whose late husband Brendan was the original Scout Leader in Naas.
