By-pass to open before year end

17 October 2003: The Kildare by-pass is on schedule to open to motorists on the N7 before the end of the year, but no firm date for its opening has yet been given.

The motorway will take 17,000 vehicles a day out of Kildare Town, though for the moment will merely shunt the traffic jam 10 kilometres south to Monasterevin, because the original plan to bypass both towns at the same time was sidelined during the hiatus over the rare snail that stalled the work.

The Kildare Town Chamber of Commerce hopes that the opening of the by-pass can be synchronised with the switching on of the town’s Christmas lights.

Work is expected to be completed on the by-pass by early November.

A fundraising walk for KARE along the motorway has been organised for November 2 by Kildare Community Services in conjunction with Kildare County Council. Other beneficiaries of the event will be the town’s Day Care Centre, St Brigid’s Hospice & Home Care Services, and KCS.
