Modus Media seeks redundancies

KILDARE 04 February 2003: Concerns over the future of one of Kildare Towns largest employers grew this week when Modus Media International announced that it would be seeking approximately 30 voluntary redundancies by the end of the week.

The company, which is a key producer of materials for technology companies such as Dell Computers, Microsoft, and Hewlett-Packard, was listed in 2001 on the Forbes 500 Largest Private Companies list, declined to say to which departments the redundancies would be sought from or whether these positions would be recreated should the companies performance improve in the future.

However the company is reported to have sought voluntary redundancies prior to this month. When asked by KNN to confirm this, the Kildare Company and its European head office in Dublin declined to comment. They also refused to confirm if the company had ever reached its target of employing in the region of 700 people in the town by the year 2000, a figure which the Tánaiste Mary Harney announced when the company was being officially opened.

The current figure is expected to be in the region of 200 employees.

When asked by KNN whether any of its operations had been moved to some of its other plants in Dublin or Limerick Modus Media International said they were not in a position to say.

They did issue a statement on the voluntary redundancies which it was seeking this week in which they said “Having reviewed our business requirements we plan to implement some redundancies and consequently we have invited employees who are interested in being considered for redundancy to let the company know, it is planed to reduce our headcount by approximately 30 positions”.
