Moat Club premieres play, theatre

NAAS 25 February 2003: The Moat Club drama group will present Conor McPhearson's 'The Weir' in a double premiere on Friday night, 28 February.

Not alone will it mark the first release of the play to the amateur circuit, but it will be the first production in the club's new E3.2 million theatre complex.

The cast of five are Anne Delaney, Conal Boyce, Padraig Broe, Frank Kirke and John Lennon.

The new theatre was built with financial support from the Depeartment of the Arts, Naas Town Council, KELT, Naas Credit Union, and Millennium Park.

The company needs to raise a total of E1.07 million from its own resources.

The Moat Club has performed on the premises since 1958, four years after it was founded.

It plans to undertake six productions a year in the new complex.

The 200-seat theatre also has a bar, and a cafe will be open during the day. There's also a new exhibition space behind the facade of the original stone building (the finishing touches being applied are pictured on the top of this piece).
