Elderly beds 'lying idle'

16 October 2003: Eighteen beds in the Maynooth Community Unit built to provide long-term and respite care for the elderly are lying idle because of financial cutbacks.

In all, 50 places were originally sanctioned for residents, but only 32 people are being cared for.

The situation is described as a 'scandal' by Deputy Emmet Stagg, who says vulnerable senior citizens who cannot live independently are denied places in a facility not being used to full capacity.
