Flood alleviation works will involve road closures

MAYNOOTH & STRAFFAN, 26 June 2002: by Bill Trapman. Interim flood alleviation works on the Lyreen/Meadowbrook rivers in Maynooth will commence within the next fortnight. Similar work is to start on the Morrell River at Straffan.

The works have been funded by the Office of Public Works at a cost of 1,130,500 euros.

Kildare County Council is also in discussion with the OPW with a view to commissioning a feasibility study to advance a comprehensive flood relief scheme for the rivers.

Meanwhile, to facilitate the works, Kildare County Council proposes to close certain roads and indicates alternative routes which should be followed by motorists in the localities affected.

These include the Straffan to Kill Road crossing at Morell Bridge Lower, from 7.00a.m. on Friday 12th July,2002 until 4.00p.m. on Friday 19th July, 2002. The alternative route is via Turnings to Sherlockstown Cross Roads over Morell Bridge through Painstown to Bishopscourt/Kill East. Local access only provided.

The road at Turnings Upper to Whitechurch road crossing at Old Morell Bridge will be for local access only from 7.00a.m on Friday 26th July, 2002 until 4.00p.m. on Friday 2nd August,2002. The alternative route is via Turnings Lower to Morell Bridge to Ballyhays.

Sherlockstown Cross roads through Sherlockstown to Painstown to Bishopscourt/Kill East will be local access only from7.00a.m. on Friday 9th August, 2002 until 4.00p.m. on Friday 16th August, 2002. The alternative route is via Daars South to Turnings Upper to Whitechurch to Bishopscourt/Kill East.

Any objections to the above closures should be lodged in writing to Liam Dunne, Senior Executive Officer, Roads Section, Kildare County Council, St. Mary’s, Naas, Co. Kildare on or before 5.00p.m. on Tuesday 25th June, 2002.
