Truck overturns on Kilcullen Bypass

KILCULLEN, 16 August 2002: by Brian Byrne. A Baltinglass lorry driver was lucky to escape with his life this morning when his truck went out of control at the start of the M9 motorway which bypasses Kilcullen.

Sean Kinsell, with an address at Tankardstown, Baltinglass, was taken to Naas Hospital after the accident, where he was treated for 'minor injuries'. Mr Kinsella was driving for Peadar Byrne Haulage in Castledermot.

Northbound traffic had to be diverted for a number of hours while the truck and its load of linseed and rapeseed was cleared from the motorway. The incident was attended by two units of Newbridge Fire Brigade.

The truck mounted the central meridian during the incident, and could quite likely have ended up on the southbound carriageway with potentially catastrophic consequences. Fortunately the vehicle overturned, though its load was spread across the southbound carriageway.

KNN understands that the driver felt his load shift as he went under the bridge at the beginning of the motorway, but was unable to retain control.
