Leixlip athlete runs well in Munich

LEIXLIP, 14 August 2002: by Arran Hussey. Leixlip athlete David McCarthy ran the anchor leg for the Irish 4x400 metres relay team at the recent European Championships.

McCarthy, and Rob Daly, Paul McKee and Antoine Burke, broke the Irish national record for the event in Munich on Saturday 10 August, to qualify for the final the following day. In the final the quartet finished 5th.

19-year-old McCarthy is an exciting prospect for the future and combines his running with studies at the University of Limerick.

McCarthy is a member of Celbridge Athletic Club, and last month in Jamaica was 7th in the 400m final at the World Junior Championship breaking the Irish junior record. He could not qualify through to the semi-finals of the 400m in the European Championships. However, the experience of senior international competion at this level will stand to the exciting young prospect in the future.
