Leixlip Garda Station comes closer

LEIXLIP, 14 October 2002: Closure of the purchase of a site for a Garda Station in Leixlip is ‘expected in the coming weeks’ according to the minister for finance, Charlie McCreevy.

He said this in response to a Dail Question from local TD Deputy Emmet Stagg, who welcomed the progress but said that the construction of the station should be ‘made a priority’ under the Department of Justice’s Building Programme.

“I will press the minister for justice to ensure the fast-tracking of the application for planning permission and the actual construction of the station,” he said in a statement at the weekend.

He also said he will continue to press the minister on the need for a 24-hour Garda Station in the north of County Kildare. He said such a station needs to be established in Maynooth to serve the town’s of Maynooth, Leixlip and Celbridge, which have a combined population of more than 40,000 people.

“I still find it remarkable that the three 24-hour stations in the county are in Naas, Newbridge and Kildare Town, with nothing for the north of the county in close proximity with Dublin criminals,” Deputy Stagg says, noting that there was local Garda support for the provision of such a station.
