Labour candidates selected

04 July 2003: At Selection Conventions held on Tuesday June 24th in the Springfield Hotel, Leixlip, the Labour Party selected candidates for the Leixlip Electoral Area of Kildare County Council and for Leixlip Town Council.

Over 40 delegates attended the Convention which was chaired by Deputy Jack Wall.

The following candidates were selected:

LEIXLIP ELECTORAL AREA

Two candidates were selected: outgoing Councillor, Cllr John Mc Ginley and Cllr Colm Purcell.

Cllr Mc Ginley has been a member of Kildare County Council since 1993 and was successfully re-elected in 1999 having secured 45% of the first preference votes in Maynooth Town.

Cllr Purcell was a member of Kildare County Council from 1985 to 1999 and narrowly lost out on his seat in the 1999 elections by just over 100 votes.

LEIXLIP TOWN COUNCIL

Three candidates were selected, outgoing Town Councillors, Colm Purcell and Sean
Purcell, and a new candidate Paul Schweppe.

Cllr Purcell has been a member of Leixlip Town Council since 1988 and was Cathaoirleach for the past year.

Cllr Purcell has also been a member since 1988 and was elected leas Cathaoirleach at the A.G.M. on June 23rd.

Paul Schweppe has lived in Leixlip since 1988 and is a member of the Party since 1982. He is currently Treasurer of Leixlip Labour Branch and Secretary of Castletown Residents Association.

Following Cllr Catherine Murphy`s decision to resign from the Party the Labour Party in Leixlip and Maynooth will look at selecting additional candidates for both electoral contests.”
