KILCULLEN, 6 July 2002: by Trish Whelan. Kildare County Council has no funds from development levies for an all-weather pitch at the site provided by Kilcullen Community Centre.

The news was given at a recent Naas Area Committee meeting in response to a query by Cllr Anthony Lawlor who sought funding for the pitch.

Locals were seeking around 150,000 euro from the Council to help fund the project.

Kilcullen Community Centre have received a grant of 25,000 euros from the Council and also received a Lotto grant.

Ray Bonar, Leisure and Recreational manager with Kildare County Council said there are no development levies for anything like that, ‘or even that kind of amount’, in the Kilcullen area.

Charlie Talbot, Information Officer, pointed out that there are a number of planning permissions pending. “The recreational or amenity end of the levies would be pretty thin anyway,” he added.

He asked the committee to accept assurances ‘the Council will do everything it can in this case, but can’t make any promises’.
