3,001 jobs lost in IDA-East

KILDARE GENERAL, 23 December 2001: by Brian Byrne. Employment in IDA-sponsored companies in the East Region of the IDA declined by 4.4% in the year 2001 over the previous year, according to the organisation’s end-of-year statement. This represented a net loss of 3,001 jobs.

In all, there were 3,865 jobs fewer in such companies throughout the country at the end of the year. More than 17,000 jobs were lost nationally in 2001, while 13,100 new jobs were gained. The net decline is the first for 15 years. Almost half of all jobs lost were in County Dublin. And the rate of job losses was almost double the average for the last 10 years.

Employment in the IT sector declined by 10%, but jobs in International Services went up by 7.9% and Pharmaceuticals/Healthcare improved by 4.7%.
