Gardai, youth group, warn on Hallow E'en

KILDARE GENERAL, 13 October 2002: With the approach of Hallow E'en, gardai have issued a strong safety message to parents and children who might buy and use fireworks, which are illegal without special licence here.

In particular, they have reminded people of the 'Black Cat' bangers, which have caused injuries in the past and which are available here on a 'black market' of fireworks sales.

And Naas Youth Information Centre has also issued guidlines to young people on how to stay safe over the Hallow E’en festive period.

Mainly it is common sense, but time spent going over safety rules or guidelines is always time well spent. Most importantly: do not go out alone; stay away from busy roads; wear something bright; do not go too near bonfires; keep your pets indoors; keep away from dangerous fireworks; do not give peanuts or other small items to babies or young children.

NOTE: Black Cat is a reputable maker of fireworks who have been selling their products in the US since 1952. They manufacture to US safety standards, and have a strong policy on safety in the use of their products. Nevertheless, sale of fireworks in this country is illegal.

A new directory of organisations involved in the disability sector in Kildare has been produced by Action South Kildare in collaboration with the Kildare Access Association. The publication was produced as part of a FAS training programme and is the first of its kind in the county.
