Crime a big election issue - Alan Dukes (Feb 11)

Fine Gael have published a damning report on the Government's miserable efforts to tackle crime which revealed that 95% don't believe that the Government is doing enough to tackle crime and 93% are afraid to walk the streets in our towns and cities at night.

"This national survey clearly illustrates that the public has lost all faith in the Government's ability to reclaim the streets. It is also grim reading for those who were taken in by Fianna Fail's so called 'zero tolerance' promise at the last election", Alan Dukes said.

"The survey of residents of our cities and towns throughout the country also showed that the Gardai have been deserted by the Government - a whopping 87% believe that they are not adequately resourced and an overwhelming majority (95%) wants to see more Gardai on the beat.

"The findings clearly show that street crime and fear of assault are destroying the quality of life of very many people with 90% of parents petrified that their teenage children might be beaten up at night.

"Fine Gael is committed on return to Government to a 'Safer Homes, Safer Streets' policy programme which will put the emphasis on community policing, community consultation and community policing priorities. A regular visible Garda presence on the streets will form a central part of the programme. It is essential to make our streets safe to walk in day and night and to end night-time street fear," said Deputy Dukes.
