'Cuddly' brings spring to life

NAAS, 8 April 2002: by Brian Byrne. This is 'Cuddly', one of a clutch of eight beautiful ducklings hatched near the canal outside Naas. Just a few days old, he seems to be the bravest of the bunch, being quite happy to pose for photographs while he rests in the sun.

A similar clutch hatched in the same area last year disappeared overnight, probably to the ravages of a passing fox. 'Cuddly' and his brothers are being taken away by a wildlife organisation today to a place of safety where they can survive until strong enough to fend for themselves.

Spring has certainly arrived. We wish 'Cuddly' and his siblings a long an happy life. And we thank those who tipped us off for the opportunity to observe them on one of the early sunny days in that life.

Above - two of Cuddly's siblings.

Right - A sleeping Cuddly's size can be gauged by the pencil stub.
