Development levies another 'stealth tax'

03 December 2003: Kildare County Council is proposing a €14,000 Development Contribution to be levied on all new houses.

The council also plans a €75 per sq m levy on commercial buildings.

This is against the background of a 15 per cent cut in the funding from Central Funds allocated to roads, water and sewerage projects.

According to Cllr John McGinley, the shortfall is being made up by the local authorities of Development Conributions, that will cost in Kildare in excess oof €750 million over the next 20 years.

He condemned the proposed levies as 'yet another stealth tax' on first time home buyers.
