Crime situation slammed

08 April 2003: Provisional crime figures for 2002 show that the detection rate in the Carlow/Kildare Division is now the lowest in the country at 29 per cent. This compares to the national detection rate of 38 per cent for 2002.

The incidence of murder, rape, robbery and aggravated burglary, house burglaries, larcenies from shops and unattended vehicles show an increase of 23 per cent on the 2001 figure, an increase in line with the national incidences.

Deputy Emmet Stagg said today that the figures showed again that Garda resources are under strength in the area, a matter which he has repeatedly raised with the new minister for justice and his predecessor, 'but to no avail'.
