Clane Musical Society open night

CLANE, 5 September: by Bill Trapman. Clane Musical Society are having an Open Night on Wednesday 5th September in The Abbey, Clane at 8.30pm for their forthcoming productions: A play in mid-October and their musical for March 2002 - Fiddler on the Roof.

The musical is set in 1905 in a Jewish Community in Czarist Russia in a village called Anatevka. The story centers around Tevye, his wife and five daughters. Tevye is a milkman who has a personal relationship with God in whom he confides with regularly especially when his daughters are causing him trouble. He strives very hard to keep up the traditions of his faith, race and culture, however, five daughters are in themselves a problem but what is more pressing is trying to find husbands for the eldest three.

The show is very well known and loved and features such numbers as "Matchmaker" and "If I were a rich man".

Clane Musical Society members had a very busy year starting off with their very successful show "Me and My Girl" back in March. Then came the AIMS Choral Festival in New Ross which was a great weekend enjoyed by all. In June there was the annual First Active AIMS Awards in the Mount Brandon Hotel in Tralee where the Society won two Aims awards: Best Actor: Aidan Donoghue for his entertaining role as Bill and Best Stage Manager: Marie Cusack for her ever brilliant management of the show.

The Society also received a third AIMS nomination for their director Arthur McGauran who will be back with Clane again this year, along with Brian Brady as Musical Director and Deirdre Browne as Choreographer.

Just a few weeks ago the Society entertained the crowds in Naas at the Green Gate Festival while last week some members were involved in Lyric Opera’s production of "My Fair Lady" in the National Concert Hall. Well done to everyone involved both on and off stage it’s just a pity not everyone in the society got to see them in the Concert Hall as tickets were sold out three weeks before opening.

Congratulations also to Brendan Farrell and Brigid Loughlin who got married recently in Naas hopefully they’ll bring back some sunshine from Venice!

So if you would like to join Clane Musical Society and become involved with their productions either on or off stage make your way to the Abbey in Clane next Wednesday 5th September at 8:30 where you’ll learn more about the Society and get to meet the production team for next year’s show Fiddler on the Roof. Membership is open to anyone over 16. Contact Anne Noonan for more information at 045 868735.
