Schneider closure 'distrous'

10 September 2003: The announcement of 315 redundancies at the Schneider Electrical manufacturing plant in Celbridge has been described as 'a disastrous development for the people of North Kildare' by local deputy Emmet Stagg.

The company has been present in Celbridge for 26 years. Deputy Stagg appealed to the Tanaiste, Mary Harney, to do all in her power to source alternative employment for those who have been made redundant.

"It is incumbent on the Tanaiste and the Government to put together a definite recovery package for the area," he said. "They became far too complacent in recent years that the good times would last, and now it is the ordinary workers and their families who suffer as the economy deteriorates."
