Students presented with awards

NAAS, 2 October 2002: Awards for outstanding achievements have been made to Leaving Cert students at Naas CBS Meánscoil Iognáid Rís.

The James Fanning Memorial Award, for the pupil who has greatly contributed to school life or whose achievement is 'special' went to David Burke (above) for his outstanding Leaving Cert results.

A new award for all-round excellence, the Denis Dunning Memorial Award, was won by Michael Cocoman, and six boys were awarded scholarships under the Denis Dunning Arts Awards scheme - Micheál O’Leary, Michael Mahon, Shane Beatty, Jamie Merrins, Paul O’Brien and Aidan Keane.

The David Phelan Award for the best Construction Studies project went to Damien Conway for his well-crafted telephone table. Shane D’Arcy took the Sports Star award.

Special Achievement Awards also went to Gerard Howard James, Eoin Spring, Eoin Kavanagh, Paul Farrell, Eoghan Buggle, Colm O’Driscoll, Stephen Behan and Ferghal Rooney.

School principal Noel Meiric said the awards event was a ‘very positive one’ that he looked forward to each year.

Stephen Behan (above left) who received a Special Achievement Award at the Naas CBS Leaving Cert 2002 Awards Night. He is pictured with his award project, a model of the Goods Store of the Sallins-Tullow Railway Line in Naas. The wood and stone model, part of his Construction Studies Course, took some 107 hours to build. Also pictured are his mum Jane, sister Louise and dad Seamus.
