MAYNOOTH, 19 June 2001: by Trish Whelan. On receipt of legal advice, Kildare Council has written to Duchas, the heritage body, advising them of their intention to proceed with the Bond Bridge Realignment project.
The Council has advised Duchas that their objections to the project were received outside of the statutory period and in such circumstances cannot be considered. If Duchas fail to respond within two weeks, the Council will presume that they accede to the Council’s proposal.
In welcoming Kildare County Council’s move forward, Deputy Emmet Stagg TD has called on Duchas to end their ‘spurious objections’ to the Council’s proposals and called on them to accept the Council’s conservation proposals for the old bridge which involves the taking down of the old bridge and its storage for rebuilding elsewhere.
Deputy Stagg said it is time Duchas ‘faced facts on this issue’.
