Major history conference in Athy

ATHY, 28 November 2002: A conference in Athy on Saturday week, December 7, will provide a detailed presentation of the history of County Kildare from pre-historic times right up to the beginning of the third millennium.

Organised by Kildare County Library and Geography Publications, the seminar in Athy Community Library will feature a wide variety of eminent professional and amateur historians, and writers, in a number of discussions on various key events and periods in the county.

The sessions will be chaired by Dr William Nolan, Dr Tom McGrath, Breda Gleeson, Karel Kiely and Niall Bradley.

The speakers include John McKenna, Professor P J Duffy (the Territorial identity of County Kildare); Muiris Ó Suilleabhan (Kildare in early pre-historic times); Dr Colm Lennon (The Fitzgeralds of Kildare and aristocratic self-fashioning 1470-1630); Mary Burke (The Monasterevan lands of the earl of Drogheda); Dr Tom McGrath (The Bishops of Kildare and Leighlin 1752-1819); Mario Corrigan (The battles of Rathangan 24-26 May, 1798); Liam Chambers (Patrick O'Kelly and the interpretation of the Rebellion in 1798 in County Kildare); Dr Terence Dooley (IRA activity in County Kildare during the War of Independence); David Gorry (Kildare 1950-2000); and Des Egan (Kildare!).
