Workhouse cemetary memorial

NAAS, 17 October 2002: Naas Local History Group are planning to erect a memorial stone at the Workhouse Cemetery on the Craddockstown Road as a mark of respect to the many who lie there.

The stone is currently being prepared in Ballyknocken granite quarries and will bear the inscription ‘Naas Workhouse Cemetery, opened January 1849.’ It will also include a small prayer by local author Mae Leonard.

Naas Local History Group have asked Naas Town Council to help to have the 36 inch high stone erected at the entrance to the cemetery, which is close to Kildare County Council HQ at St Mary’s.

This will require the moving of a small silver birch tree which is growing on the proposed location and the laying of a small concrete base on which the stone can be set.

The stone will in place for the November Memorial Prayer Service in the Cemetery.
