Sports First Aid Course

The course can be delivered in one day (7 hours) or over 2 evenings in 3 and a half hour sessions.

 Session 1:     

  • Introduction to First Aid
  • Personal and patient safety
  • Approach, assessment and accident scene management
  • Making a 999 / 112 call

 Session 2:     

  • Spinal considerations for all sports injuries
  • Head injuries
  • Resuscitation: Rescue Breathing, one person C.P.R.
  • Resuscitation for children and infants
  • Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO) Adults and Children
  • Using Resuscitation Devices (vent aids and face masks)
  • Recovery position (not for suspected spinal injuries)
  • Vomit position (Also used to clear “swallowed” tongue, common  in sports high impact)

 Session 3:     

  • Wounds and Bleeding
  • External and internal bleeding: causes and treatment
  • Shock and Bleeding from Special Areas
  • Bandaging Skills
  • Foreign Bodies in wounds
  • Vital Signs (Breathing rates, Pulse rates, Skin colour and temperature, Levels of response, eye reactions)
  • First Aid Kits

Session 4:     

  • Fracture recognition and management
  • Muscle and joint injuries
  • Bandaging Skills           

Session 5:     

  • Management of Burns
  • Management of Poisons

 Session 6:     

  • Managing the effects of Heat and Cold
  • Management of Medical Conditions (Asthma, Epilepsy, Diabetes)
  • Management of minor injuries
