Neil Vorster’s corner was sent in beyond the back post where Ian Mooney took it down and beat his marker. His powerful shot produced a marvellous one-handed reaction save from the home keeper. Kilcock Celtic won this north Kildare derby on Sunday morning last, played in excellent conditions at Scoil Dara. Celtic made a number of changes to their team from the previous game and it showed in the result. Kilcock were the better team in the opening period of this game. The home team had 2 efforts cleared off the Barnhall goal line from Stephen Shorthouse and Robert Cox.

Eoin Moriarty was also unlucky not to open the scoring after 20 minutes when his shot went wide of the Rovers post.

However, Barnhall almost took a shock lead after thirty seven minutes when a long range effort hit the Kilcock crossbar.

In the second half, Barnhall got more into the game, but failed to score. With the game looking like ending in a draw, Kilcock took the lead in the seventieth minute, when sub Paval Bazlade, with his first touch fired a shot from outside the box into the back of the Barnhall net. Barnhall looked set to get an equaliser after 87 minutes when a Barnhall forward was in on goal, but centre-half Ian O’Mahony made a great tackle to clear the danger. This was a very exciting game, with both teams creating scoring chances from the first to the final whistle.

The home team settled quicker and created the first chance after five minutes. Cathal McCabe collected the ball in the centre of the field and chipped over the advancing home defence to put Ian Mooney free on the left. Mooney whipped in his cross at pace. Neil Vorster got on the end of the cross and his first time shot produced a great save from Eoghan Crotty in goal for the visitors.

The next clear chance fell to Vorster on the twenty minute mark, Dane Hoban won the ball in midfield and found Elliot Fowler on his right, Fowler angled the ball in to Vorster on the edge of the box, and he bore down on goal and slipped the ball past the advancing keeper but the ball rolled past the wrong side of the left upright.

Kills best chance came after twenty five minutes when Brian Coll put a long ball over the home defence and Luke Cumiskey was free on goal only to be denied by the advancing keeper Greg Murphy, the keeper had to leave his area and coolly headed the ball clear and away from danger.

After the break, Kill dominated the opening period. There was some resolute defending from the home defence, with great performances from Daffyd Jones, Adam Leonard, Leon Glennon and Conor Dully denying the visitors any clear cut chances.

Kill’s best chance fell to Luke Cumiskey after fifteen minutes when he shot past the advancing keeper, the ball was goal-bound before Dully headed clear and out for a corner.

Kilcock looked very dangerous on the break and took the lead after fifteen minutes. Following a throw-in in there own half, captain, Evan Comerford released Michael Bambury down the right wing. His volley from just outside the area found the back of the net.

Kill responded well as they tried to create an opening to level the game, but Leon Glennon was magnificent in defence and they snuffed out Kill’s attempts.

Kilcock strengthened midfield with the introduction of Cian McIntyre and Shane O’Brien in an attempt to stem the visitor’s efforts.

The home side always looked dangerous on the counter attach and Shane O’Brien created a great chance for Elliot Fowler. Fowler’s header produced a great save from the visitor’s keeper.

This was a great game to watch. Both teams were evenly matched and all players gave their all.

Kilcock Celtic: Cormac Fallon, Greg Murphy, Cian McIntyre, Conor Dully, Leon Glennon, Adam Leonard, Daffyd Jones, Evan Comerford (captain), Dane Hoban, Elliot Fowler, Cathal McCabe, Ian Mooney, Niel Vorster, Shane O’Brien, Michael Bambury.

Kilcock Celtic 3 Athgarvan Villa 2 01/11/2008

Kilcock Celtic 3 Athgarvan Villa 2 01/11/2008

This was a keenly fought contest between two well-matched teams on a fresh bright morning in Scoil Dara. In the early stages the home team were dominant and broke the deadlock after ten minutes. Ian Mooney went on a run up the left wing and won a throw-in close to the penalty box. Neil Vorster swung in a “Rory Delap” style long throw and Evan Comerford flicked the ball onto Leon Glennon who volleyed over his left shoulder and the ball dropped into the back of the net.

The home team continued to raid for the next 10 minutes with chances falling to Neil Vorster, Cathal McCabe and Evan Comerford. Halfway through the first half the visitors began to settle and began to put the home defence under some pressure. This pressure paid off on the half hour when Eoin Morrissey put Dan Kavanagh through on goal and he shot passed the advancing keeper to level the game.

After the interval Kilcock started on the offensive and Athgarvan defended well and hit on the counter-attack. The game developed into this pattern for the rest of the second half. The visitors were excellent at quick breakaways and the home back four of Barry Conlon, Dane Hoban, Elliot Fowler and Adam Leonard had to dig deep on many occasions to prevent the Villa from taking the lead.

With fifteen minutes gone, Celtic regained the lead when captain Adam Leonard took a long-range goal bound shot, which deflected off a defender and past an unsighted Sean Forgarty into the visitors net.

Again Athgarvan upped their game and forced a corner on the right. Morrissey sent in cross, which was headed clear but only as far as Shane Saul on the edge of the box and he curled in a lovely low shot into the bottom right corner to level the game again.

Kilcock were determined to get their first home win of the season and threw everthing into the game. However the visitors were still very dangerous on the counter-attack and the home keeper Cian McIntyre made an excellent save on the half hour to prevent Morrissey from scoring a lead goal.

With less then ten minutes left in the game, Celtic virtually laid siege to the visitor’s goal area. Elliot Fowler scraped the crossbar with a free kick from 30 yards. Leon Glennon saw two chances go just over the cross bar and Shane O’Brien was unlucky not to hit the target from close range.

In the last minute Cormac Fallon broke down the left wing and forced a corner. Cathal McCabe sent in an in-swinger, which was cleared off the line and away towards the corner flag. The loose ball was collected by Conor Dully who created an angle for himself to send in a left footed shot, which curled into the top corner of the net to win the game for Kilcock Celtic.

This was a very entertaining game from two well-matched teams. Every player game one hundred percent in this free flowing game

U14 Major Division
Kilcock Celtic 2 Kill Celtic 2
01/03/2008

This was a very exciting game with end-to-end football from start to finish. Both teams gave 100% as they battled with a swirling wind throughout the game.

The home team settled quicker and created their first real scoring chance after five minutes. Evan Comerford beat the offside trap and crossed the ball in from the left wing. Shane O’Brien controlled the ball beautifully and rounded the last defender. His curling shot beat the advancing keeper but went just wide of the upright. A few minutes later Kilcock’s Leon Glennon took possession in midfield and played the ball over the top for Conor Dully to run onto. Dully rounded two defenders but his shot was smothered brilliantly by Kill’s keeper Nathan Fitzharris.

Kilcock continued to pepper the visitor’s goal but had to wait until the twentieth minute to open the scoring. Cathal McCabe took the ball out of Kilcock’s box and found Dully on the halfway line, Dully passed to Leon Glennon who flicked it on for Niall Vorster. Vorster burst into the box and his delicate chip found the back of the visitor’s net.

Within five minutes Kilcock went two up when Adam Leonard went down the left wing, his cross found Jonathan McGrath and his blistering shot from thirty yards found the top corner of the net.

Kill responded well and forced there way back into the game on the half hour. Brian Coll capitalised on a mix up in the home teams defence and put Brian O’Connor in on goal and he shot pass the advancing keeper to open Kill’s account.

Kilcock Celtic were unlucky not to go into the interval further ahead with Jonathan McGrath hitting the crossbar on two occasions before the halftime whistle.

After the interval, Kill immediately won a corner. Brian Call sent in a lovely in-swinging corner the Ref adjudged that the keeper carried the ball across his own line and awarded a goal to Kill. This was just the start that Kill required and they mounted a serious campaign to capture the lead.

Kill now had the advantage of a strong breeze and they continued to play long balls over the top. The home defence of Cathal McCabe, Dane Hoban, Elliot Fowler and Adam Leonard were forced to work hard for the rest of the second half.

Kill created several chances as the vied for the lead. The most clear cut chance was created by Mena Lucav in the twenty second minute. He dribbled into the home team’s box but just as he was about to release the trigger Conor Dully slid in to push the ball out for a corner.

After surviving the Kill onslaught for two thirds of the half, Kilcock began to create a number of chances of their own. Ian Mooney moved over to the left wing and setup a number of opportunities for Shane O’Brien and Niall Vorster.

Both teams continued to play counter-attacking football for the remainder of the game. Cian McIntyre, in goal for Kilcock and his counterpart Nathan Fitzharris both had to make several saves to keep the scores level.

Mena Lucav had a great second half for Kill, while Adam Leonard played his best game of the season for Kilcock and deserved the Man of the Match reward.

This was a great exciting game to watch with counter attacking football and an unpredictable result until the final whistle.

U14 Major League Kilcock Celtic 3 Kilcullen AFC 3

Both teams served up a feast of football in this exciting encounter in Scoil Dara on Saturday morning. After the horrific weather of the last month it was great to have a dry morning and both teams took full advantage of the good conditions.
Kilcullen won the toss and elected to play with the wind and they took full advantage as they forced two corners in the first few minutes.
This constant early pressure paid off in the tenth minute when Luke Doyle connected with a cross from the edge of the box and slotted home the ball past the advancing keeper.

The home side soon settled and began to mount a few attacks of their own with chances falling to Shane O’Brien and Neil Vorster. The game went from end to end as both teams battled to create chances but neither keeper was called into action.

With only five minutes remaining the visitors won a corner after sustained pressure. The home defence failed to clear the loose ball and John Daniel pounced to give his team a two nil lead. A minute later Dane Hoban was adjudged to have fouled Stephen Lawless in the box and a penalty was awarded. Stephen himself stepped up to take the spot kick and he can consider himself very unlucky.  He excellently placed the ball towards the left upright but Cian McIntyre dived brilliantly full length to push the shot wide of the upright.

In the second half Celtic took advantage of the wind and mounted a series of attacks on the visitor’s goal. Ten minutes into the half Shane O’Brien was unlucky not to score for Celtic as his shot rolled wide of the upright.

Kilcullen always looked dangerous on the counter attack and the home defence of Adam Leonard, Dane Hoban, Cathal McCabe and David Costello were kept on their toes as the visitors tried to kill the game off.

With twenty minutes left in the game Kilcock got their breakthrough when Leon Glennon and Neil Vorster combined to put Jonathan McGrath through on goal and his squeezed his shot inside the right goalpost from the tightest of angles.

Celtic rallied and went in search of the equaliser. Arran Talbot made a great save from a goal bound in-swinger from Conor Dully as Kilcock turned up the heat. With fifteen minutes left in the game Ian Mooney won the ball on the left wing and passed inside to Jonathan McGrath and his fabulous curling shot from outside the box found the roof of the net to level the game.

Kilcullen responded well and forced a corner after determined work by Stephen Lawless. The out-swinging corner from the left was forced home by Stephen to regain the lead for Kilcullen. Kilcock looked devastated but recovered quickly to once again go in search of an equaliser. With only two minutes left Kilcock were awarded a free-kick forty yards from goal. The home side sent eight players into the box in a final throw of the dice. Leon Glennon sent in a lovely in-swinger, which was meet by a series of heads until Dane Hoban passed to Conor Dully who headed it onto Leon Glennon on the penalty spot. Glennon blasted the ball to the roof of the net to the delight of the home supporters.

This was a trilling free-flowing game which either team could have won but which no team deserved to lose. Special mention to the Referee Mr Kenny Cribbin who allowed the game to flow and to Cathal McCabe who was “man of the match” for Kilcock while Stephen Lawless was best for Kilcullen.
