Kildare Local Authorities

This is the collective term for Kildare County Council, Naas Town Council, Athy Town Council, Leixlip Town Council and Newbridge Town Council.

County Childcare Committee

The County Childcare Committee was established in 2001 with the aim of co-ordinating childcare provision throughout the county.

Electoral Area

For the purposes of local elections each county and city is divided into Electoral Areas. Each Electoral Area is made up of a combination of District Electoral Divisions, the smallest administrative area for which population statistics are published. Kildare is divided into six Electoral Areas.

Dublin Transportation Area

The Dublin Transportation Area is the geographical area covered by the Dublin Transportation Office (DTO) and covers the seven local authority areas in the Greater Dublin Area. The DTO was set up in 1995 to co-ordinate an agreed transport strategy to manage transport services and infrastructure.

Mid East Region

The Mid-East Region is made up of counties Kildare, Meath and Wicklow.

Greater Dublin Area

The Greater Dublin Area is the collective term for the areas covered by Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council, South Dublin County Council, Dun Laoighre Rathdown County Council together with counties Kildare, Meath and Wicklow. It refers to the area of the country which is most dominated by the influence of Dublin City.

Foreign Direct Investment

Foreign Direct Investment is a term that refers to investment from foreign-owned firms into the Irish economy.

Design for All Concept

The ‘Design for All’ concept means that buildings are designed in such a way as to cater for the physical needs of all people, regardless of disability or ability.

Direct Provision

Direct provision is a government policy to accommodate Refugees and Asylum Seekers while their application is being processed. It means that Refugees and Asylum Seekers are dispersed to various reception centres around the county and provided with meals and board and approximately € 19 per week comfort money.

Refugee

A person who cannot live in his/her own country because of fear of persecution on the grounds of race, religion, nationality or membership of a particular social or political group (UN Geneva Convention on Refugees).

Asylum Seeker

An asylum-seeker is someone who has left his/her country and has applied for Refugee Status in another country. Asylum-seekers are legally entitled to remain in the country in which they have applied for Refugee Status until such time as a final decision is made on their case.

Tourism Task Force

The Tourism Task Force (TTF) was established in June 2000 to review progress and guide future tourism development in the county. The TTF was established as a broadly based group representing the main strands of opinion within the tourism sector. The TTF recently produced its report 'A Framework for Action' and is being replaced by the Tourism Strategy Group.

Strategic Policy Committees

Strategic Policy Committees (SPCs) are committees set up in each County Council during 2000/2001. The role of the SPC is to assist the County Council to form, develop and review policies for services. Each SPC is composed of Elected Members and representatives of relevant interest groups.

Social Partners

The social partners is the collective term for groups representing the following interests; Farming, Business/Employers, Trade Unions and theCommunity & Voluntary Sector.

Social Inclusion Measures Working Group

The Social Inclusion Measures Working Group (SIM) brings togetherthe main providers of social services and aims to co-ordinate services and spending on social inclusion so as to better target people who experience exclusion in the county.

Local Development Agencies

Local Development Agencies are agencies based at local level with a specific interest in promoting local, rural and community development. In Kildare ASK, the OAK Partnership, KELT and the County Enterprise Board are referred to as the local development agencies.

Kildare Sports Partnership

The Kildare Sports Partnership is a dedicated company set up at local level to promote and develop sport. It is one of eight Local Sports Partnerships set up in Ireland during 2001 and is composed of the local authority, VEC, Health Board, FAS, sports clubs and the community and voluntary sector, KELT, OAK, ASK, People with Disabilities, Schools & KCDB.
