Redmond has made the call for Irish Volunteers to fight with Britain in Europe and to go “wherever the fighting line extends”, leading to staunch opposition from other Volunteers.
A split in the ranks is forming. In ‘LEDWIDGE’, Humphreys explores Ledwidge’s personal conflict during World War I, his early life as a trade union organiser, and his relationships with two women – Ellie, and later Shivvy.
Touching upon themes of class, war and nationalism, ‘LEDWIDGE’ presents its subject in the context of his art and politics, bringing to life the adventurous spirit of Ireland’s greatest war poet.
