Burtown House and Gardens Sunday July 31st 2016

As part of the Carlow Gardens Festival we are hosting 2 illustrated talks with 2 of horticulture's best and most well known speakers.

Seamus O'Brien well known horticulturist, who currently manages Kilmacurragh Botanical Gardens will be speaking at 12pm.

" A Botanical Scramble for Africa-plant Exploration in the Cape and the Drakensberg"
Seamus O'Brien recounts the story of the expedition he recently led to South Africa where he and a keen group of enthusiastic Irish plants people (including Lesley Fennell from Burtown) studied the flora of the Cape, including Table Mountain, and the flowers of the Drakensberg range into Lesotho. The talk concludes with images of plants and animals in Kruger National Park.

John Grimshaw : Director of the Yorkshire Arboretum at Castle Howard, and well respected author and garden writer at 3pm.

"Plants, Gardens and People: Inspirations and Influences of my gardening life over the past 40 years"
An entertaining account of his life in gardens and the lessons learned . Using the background of Burtown House and Gardens, John covers herbaceous borders, adding magic to your late summer borders, and good planting marriages. John also discusses some of his favourite plants and trees from old varieties to surprising novelties and rising stars.
