French director Jacque Audiard’s latest film tells the story of Dheepan (Jesuthasan Antonythasan), a former Tamil Tiger fighter in Sri Lanka. As the civil war ends he decides to flee to France with two strangers, a woman and child who pose as his family in the hope of making it easier to claim asylum.
Finding a caretaker job on a troubled housing complex in the Paris suburbs, and with almost no knowledge of French, Dheepan works hard to build a new life for his fake family. But he soon realises that the past is difficult to escape from. Once again Audiard delivers a powerfully compassionate yet morally complex tale.
“Audiard possesses a lyricism that makes his film stand out... Immensely powerful” – Andrew Pulver, The Guardian
