TV’s Desperate Housewives don’t have a patch on Hedda, the spoilt and manipulative heroine of Ibsen’s masterpiece Hedda Gabler. Psychotically bored newlywed Hedda stalks around her new home like an injured panther ready to pounce on those who care for her – Lady Macbeth doesn’t get a look in.

The limits placed on Hedda by a claustrophobic society are nothing compared to the limits she has placed on herself. Things suddenly get interesting when a shady character from her past shows up. Is this Hedda’s chance to break free?

Sometimes described as the female Hamlet, Hedda is no cardboard cut-out femme fatale. Her complexity makes her a very real fictional character, and a challenge for any actress to play.

Hedda Gabler is the Moat Club’s entry in the full-length drama circuit. Join us for a story of rivalry, lust, power and a woman’s search for freedom.
