Best Recruit In Naval Company

Seaman Recruit,  John O’Mahony, a former member of the typographical staff of the Leinster Leader, who was recently selected honour man of his company at the Recruit Graduation Review at the U.S. Naval training centre at Great Lakes, Illinois.  After his apprenticeship in the Leader he joined the Kerryman, from which he emigrated to America some years ago.  By now – he got 14 days leave following the graduation – he is a member of the Navy’s Operating Forces.  The award was presented to him at the training centre, about 20 miles north of Chicago by Lt. Gen. Emerson L. Cummings.

John is very well known in Naas and lived at New Row with his grandmother, Mrs Mary Boyne; she now lives in Basin St.  His brother, Joe, is a sergeant in the R.A.F. at Bychester, England, and was on service in Aden for two years.
