Internee escapes from hospital

Eugene Powell, an internee at the Curragh internment camp, escaped while awaiting an operation for appendicitis in the General Military Hospital, Curragh Camp. After Powell had been admitted to the hospital arrangements were made by the medical staff to have the operation performed on Monday morning last, but he escaped before the operation was due to take place.

Note: Eugene Powell was from 5 Deans Lane, Tralee, Co. Kerry. He was arrested in June 1940 and transferred to the Curragh in August, from where he subsequently escaped. Eugene was later an Independent member of Tralee Urban District Council.
