George Higgins Dead
The death of Mr. George Higgins, at his residence, New Row, Naas, on Saturday, serves a long and honourable link with Kildare G.A.A. He represented the county in senior football in the early twenties and in the centrefield berth against Kerry in the drawn All-Ireland final in 1926. He captained Kildare that year. He was a member of the Naas team which won the Co. Senior Championship in 1920, ’22 and ’24 and outright winners of the Leinster Leader Cup. He played last for the town in the 1936 senior league. In later years a staunch committee member of Naas G.F.C., he was well known as a county and inter-county referee.
He was 65 and had been in failing health. The remains were removed to the Church of Our Lady and St. David on Sunday and received by Rev. L. Newman C.C. Interment on Monday was in St. Corban’s Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Brigid Higgins, brothers Thomas, Fairview, Dublin and Michael, New Row, Naas, and by his sister Mrs. A. Hogan, St. Conleth’s Place, Naas.
