Co. Kildare and The First World War

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
YOUR COUNTY NEEDS YOU!

This list is a work in progress and will be published as a book in 2015.

First instalment: SURNAMES A ― B

We need feedback and would welcome any additions or corrections people might make: also photos, diaries, medals and memorabilia which could be used for images online or in the forthcoming book would be welcome. People who give material or images of material will be credited as the donors.
We are also interested in any information on ‘Kildare’ men active in the war. EMAIL: localhistory@kildarecoco.ie

Athy Heritage Centre will host a WWI exhibition for the month of September 2014 and a range of talks and other events in September and October. See their website for details – http://www.athyheritagecentre-museum.ie

The new list has been checked against any available official sources, from holdings in Kildare Co. Library as well as the National Library and a plethora of online resources, many now available for the first time.

A great starting point for research remains the Commonwealth War Graves Commission but a wide variety of resources have been consulted.

For the purpose of compiling the list we understood a ‘Kildareman’ to mean
born (baptised and/or registered) in Co. Kildare although there are some exceptions with regard to people considered by family or local sources to be ‘Kildaremen.’
• person who has spent a considerable portion of his life/family life living in Co. Kildare and is acknowledged by local sources or family sources as a Kildareman.
• person of known ‘Kildare’ family or family with strong Kildare connections, who was born in another county/country.

This list has been created by James Durney, Mario Corrigan, Clem Roche, Karel Kiely and Chris Holzgräwe.

The earlier versions of the list of World War I Dead for Co. Kildare were more correctly casualty lists and very reliant on the news as it appeared in the local newspapers – some references were premature and some of those listed as killed were subsequently found to be wounded or missing. Others were found to be from other counties or even the UK.
A list was originally compiled by the FÁS Leinster Leader Project based in Athy and Naas. It was co-ordinated by Susan Kelly and Mary Carroll in Naas and Athy from information gathered together by Ann-Marie Heskin, Frank Taaffe and Pat Casey amongst others. Trainees checked the War Memorial Records in the National Library included Noelle Delaney, Rita Doyle, Paula Foley, Jacqueline Hyland and Sandra Clarke. Annette Dempsey, Suzanne Reid, Tanya Moran and Susan White spent long hours compiling the original list. Liam Kenny offered advice on the final draft.
