Football amongst the internees at Droichead Nua

A series of inter-county football matches amongst the Republican prisoners at Droichead Nua internment camp was brought to a finish on Sunday evening when Kildare and Dublin met in the final. Dr McCarvill, T.D., acted as referee. There was a large gathering on the side-line and much enthusiasm prevailed. A very interesting and hard fought contest found the “Short Grass” representatives proving superior to their opponents who put up a much better display then the final scores would indicate. The final whistle left the scores – Kildare 3 goals 6 points; Dublin 1 goal 5 points. Wides – Kildare, 21; Dublin, 9. Frees – Kildare, 5; Dublin, 1. 50s – Kildare, 3; Dublin, nil. The following did battle for Kildare – Jer Dooley (capt.), Michael Byrne (goal), Bill Gannon, Ml. Breslin, Tom Lynam, Francis Lynam, Stephen Gorey, Paddy Kavanagh, Maurice Lamb, Tom Gaffney, Jim Brady, Joe Smith, Joe Martin, Peter Lamb, Jim Dempsey.
