Kildare Walking Festival 2016

Walk the length of Kildare in the Grand Canal Challenge

2016 Grand Canal Challenge - Sunday 10th – Sunday 31st July 2016
FREE EVENT

Join the Grand Canal Challenge and be a part of a unique walking experience over six stages exploring Kildare’s Grand Canal from Hazelhatch, Celbridge to Athy.  The Challenge will consist of six walks over two weeks, each stage/walk covering a section of the canal. 

Transport will be provided back to the start point for the first 50 people registered for each stage/walk.

Walking Routes

Sunday July 17th @ 3 pm – STAGE 1: HAZELHATCH TO SALLINS
Distance: approx. 13 km. Meeting Point: Hazelhatch Canal Bridge.
Free parking at McEvoys Pub

Wednesday July 20th @ 11 am – STAGE 2: SALLINS TO ROBERTSTOWN
Distance: approx. 11.5 km. Meeting Point: Sallins Canal Bridge.

Sunday July 24th @ 3 pm– STAGE 3: ROBERTSTOWN TO RATHANGAN
Distance: approx. 12.5 km. Meeting Point: Robertstown Canal Bridge.

Tuesday July 26th @ 11 am. –STAGE 4: RATHANGAN TO MONASTEREVAN
Distance: approx. 10.5 km. Meeting Point: Rathangan Canal Bridge.

Thursday July 28th @ 11 am – STAGE 5: MONASTEREVAN TO VICARSTOWN
Distance: approx. 11.5 km. Meeting Point: Monasterevan Train Station.

Sunday July 31st @3 pm – STAGE 6: VICARSTOWN TO ATHY
Distance: approx. 11 km. Meeting Point: Vicarstown Canal Bridge.

Celbridge Abbey to Castletown
A guided walk of Celbridge Abbey Grounds and the lovely Castletown river walk. The Abbey grounds have a rare beauty and feature “The Rock Bridge,” the oldest remaining bridge spanning the Liffey. Connections to Celbridge Abbey include Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver’s Travels, and Henry Grattan, the greatest orator in the Irish House of Commons.

Bogland Walk Lullymore Heritage Park
A guided Bog land walk, looking at the changing face of the midland bogs and taking in the butterfly conservation nature reserve.

Guided Walk of Carton House Parklands
A guided walk of Carton House Parklands featuring wonderful specimen, trees and the Tyrconnell Tower.

Wednesday July 13th @ 7.30 pm  6-7 km 1.5hrs
Curragh Camp to Gibbet Rath
A guided walk on the Curragh Camp focusing on the structures of the original military camp built at the turn of the 20th Century (1km) and then an optional longer walk (5/6 km) to the Gibbet Rath (with a moderately steep climb), the site of a massacre in 1798. The walks can be done independently of each other.

Arthur’s Way Walk, Celbridge
A guided walk along a section of Arthur’s Way taking in Batty Langley Lodge at Castletown and the magnificent Wonderful Barn near Leixlip built in 1743 by Catherine Connolly.

Friday July 15th @ 7.30 pm  5.2 km 1hr
Clane to Clongowes Wood Walk
A 5.2 km round trip walk to Clongowes which will highlight how the locality was portrayed in James Joyce’s book. Walkers can join the route anywhere between Clane and the 202 year old school.

Saturday July 16th  @ 3 pm  4 km 1hr
Monasterevin Town Walk
A guided walk around the town of Monasterevin, a place referred to as the ‘Venice of Ireland’ because of the number of bridges in close proximity and looking at the connections to such famous people as the tenor Count John McCormack and the poet and Jesuit Gerald Manley Hopkins.
