Where is my Motor Tax Office located and what are the opening hours?

The Motor Tax Office is located at Aras Chill Dara, Devoy Park, Naas, Co. Kildare. The opening hours are: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9.15am - 3.15pm, Wednesday 9.30am -3.15pm.


What do I need to apply for a first Learner Permit?

You need the following: (1) Driver Theory Test Certificate. (2) Learner Permit Application Form D201, fully completed and signed. (3) Eyesight Report Form for 1st ever licensing. (4) 2 identical passport sized photographs, signed on the reverse side. (5) Fee [ 1 or 2 year € 15 ]. Cheques made payable to Kildare County Council, Money Order, Bank Draft, Credit or Laser Card payments accepted. (6) A Medical Report Form may be necessary in certain circumstances, namely : When applying for a Learner Pemit in categories C, CI, D, D1, EC, EC1, ED or ED1; When the applicant is over 70 years of age; If the applicant has a medical condition. (7) Birth certificate, Passport, Identity Card (as per RSA) (8) Cert of Registration (GNIB)/Passport with valid visa for non EU members. (9) Passport for EU Nationals. (10) Any Learner Permit with a start date on or after the 4th April 2011 must complete The Essential Driving Training before applying for the Practical Driving Test details of this can be found on the R.S.A. website wwwrsa.ie


What documentation do I need to submit to apply for a 2nd Learner Permit?

If this application is a renewal of the same categories as your previous licence, the following is required: (1) Learner Permit Application Form - D201, fully completed and signed. (2) Expired Learner Permit - If this Permit has been lost/misplaced or stolen, then the application must be accompanied by a D8A form stamped at Garda Station & original Photo ID will be required. (3) 2 identical passport sized photographs, signed on the reverse. (4) Fee [ 1 or 2 year € 15 ]. Cheques made payable to Kildare County Council. Money Orders, Bank Drafts, Credit or Laser Card payments accepted.


How do I apply to have my name and/or address changed on my current Learner Permit/Full Driving Licence ?

You need the following: (1) Current Learner Permit/Full Licence. (2) Learner Permit - D201/Full Licence - D401 Application Form with your new name and/or address, completed and signed. (3) 2 identical passport sized photographs, signed on the reverse. (4) A Marriage Certificate, if the change of name is due to marriage; A Birth Certificate, if the change of name is reverting back to a maiden name; A Solicitor's Letter, confirming the change of name, if the change is by Deed Poll. Only Original Documentation is acceptable. Note there is no fee required for this application.


My last Learner Permit is in date. What documentation do I need to submit to get a replacement?

You need the following : (1) Duplicate Licence Application - Form D800, fully completed and signed. This form must also be signed and stamped by a member of the Garda Síochána. (2) 2 identical passport sized photographs, signed on the reverse. (3) A fee of €10 (4) Photo ID is required eg: Passport, GNIB, Identity Card.


How I apply for a Driver Theory Test ?

All enquires regarding this test including booking details, appropriate fee, location of the test centre and method of testing should be addressed to the Driver Theory Testing Service at the following telephone numbers : 1890 606 106 - English Language, 1890 606 806 - Irish Language, 1890 616 216 - Text Phone. Book online at www.theorytest.ie Have your Personal Public Service Number - PPSN (formerly R.S.I number), credit card details and driving licence (if you have one) to hand OR You can also apply by completing the Driver Theory Test application form and posting it together with the appropriate fee (€40.60) to: Driver Theory Test, PO Box 788, Togher, Cork. Postal Orders & cheques made payable to Driver Theory Test.


Do I need to sit a Driver Theory Test ?

Yes, if any of the following applies to you : (1) You are applying for a 1st Learner Permit, in any category. (2) Your previous Provisional/ Learner Permit has expired by 5 years or more (or by 10 years or more in the case of a Full Driving Licence) (3) You hold a current Learner Permit in a particular category, but wish to apply for a Learner Permit in a category in which you have not previously passed the Driver Theory Test, in the past 2 years.


How do I apply for a Driving Test ?

You must complete an Application for a Driving Test Form and post it, together with the appropriate fee (below), to the following address: Driver Testing Section, The Road Safety Authority, Moy Valley Business Park, Primrose Hill, Ballina Co. Mayo. Or make your application online @ www.drivingtest.ie. Fees: Categories A, A1, B, EB, M and W €85. Categories C, C1, D and D1 € 120. Categories EC, EC1, ED and ED1 €120.


Am I fully licensed to drive as soon as I pass my driving test?

No - You are not fully licensed until you have been issued with a Full Driving Licence.


I have passed my Driving Test. What documentation do I need to submit to apply for a Full Driving Licence ?

You need : (1) Certificate of Competency - received from the driving tester on passing your driving test. (2) Learner Permit. (3) Full Driving Licence Application Form D401, fully completed & signed. (4) 2 identical passport sized photographs signed on the reverse side. (5) Fee [ 1 year € 5, 3 year € 15, 10 year € 25 ]. Cheques made payable to Kildare County Council. Money Orders, Bank Drafts, Credit or Laser Card payments accepted. (6) A Medical Report Form may be required in certain circumstances, namely : When applying for a full driving licence in categories C, C1, D, D1, EC, EC1, ED or ED1, when the applicant is over 70 years of age, or if the applicant has a medical condition.


I am aged between 16 and 69. What documentation do I need to submit to apply to renew my Full Driving Licence ?

You need the following : (1) Full Driving Licence Application Form D401, fully completed and signed. (2) Expired Full Driving Licence. (3) 2 identical passport sized photographs, signed on the reverse side (4) Fee [ 1 year € 5, 3 year € 15, 10 year € 25 ]. Cheques made payable to Kildare County Council. Money Orders, Bank Drafts, Credit or Laser Card payments accepted. (5) A Medical Report Form may be necessary, when applying for a full driving licence : In categories C, C1, D, D1, EC, EC1, ED or ED1 OR if the applicant has a medical condition. (6) A signed declaration from the applicant may be necessary if you hold any of the above higher categories, but do not wish to renew them. If during the life of the licence, you decide that you want to reclaim the aforementioned categories, you must then submit a Medical Report.


I would like to add an extra category to my Full Driving Licence. What documentation do I need?

You need the following: (1) Certificate of Competency - received from the driving tester on passing your driving test. (2) Full Driving Licence Application Form - D401, fully completed & signed. (3) 2 identical passport sized photos, signed on the reverse side. (4) Full Driving Licence & Learner Permit (5) A Medical Report may be necessary, only in the case whereby you are applying for a Higher (C, C1, D, D1, EC, EC1, ED, ED1). A Medical must cover the period of the Full Licence. Note there is no fee for this transaction.


Can I exchange my full Foreign Driving Licence for a full Irish Driving Licence ?

A person living in Ireland for more than 185 days of the year can have their current Full Foreign Driving Licence exchanged for a Full Irish Driving Licence, if that licence was originally issued in any of the approved countries (see question below). You need to submit : (1) Full Foreign Driving Licence. (2) Full Driving Licence Application Form - D401 fully completed & signed. (3) Exchange of Driving Licence Application Form - D900. (4) 2 identical passport sized photographs signed on the reverse side. (5) Fee [ 1 year € 5, 3 year € 15, 10 year € 25 ] . Cheques made payable to Kildare County Council. Money Orders, Bank Drafts, Credit & Laser Card payments accepted. (6) A Medical Report may be necessary only in the case whereby you are applying for a Higher category (C, C1, D, D1, EC, EC1, ED, ED1) OR if the applicant has a medical condition. Please note if the Foreign Licence has been lost/misplaced or stolen, an original Letter or Entitlement must be submitted and this must be accompanied by Original Photo ID.

What do I need to renew the tax on my car (Private Vehicle)?

To renew your motor tax you will need the following: If there is no change in the details of the vehicle and its owner, you will need the RF100B – computerised reminder posted to the registered owner of the vehicle from the Vehicle Registration Unit in Shannon. If your reminder has a PIN number printed on it you can tax your vehicle online via www.motortax.ie  If you don’t receive a printed reminder in the post or if there is a gap between the last tax disc and the current application you must complete an RF100A form which is available on our website, from local libraries, Garda Stations or at our office. Current Vehicle Insurance Details, i.e. name of insurer, policy number and date of expiry. Payment of the appropriate fee – see rates of duty.  Payment may be by cheque made payable to Kildare County Council, cash, credit or debit card. Do not send cash in the post.


What categories of vehicles are eligible to use motor tax on line?

Private Cars, Agricultural Tractors / Excavators, Motorcycles, Exempt Vehicles (i.e. vehicles adapted for use by disabled persons) Motor Caravans and Vintage/Veteran Vehicles may be taxed online.  The site facilitates the payment of up to 3 months arrears, after which time your PIN number will become inactive and your motor tax transaction must be completed through your local motor tax office. Please note that Goods Vehicles may not be taxed online.


When are Motor Tax Arrears charged?

Motor Tax arrears are charged if a month or more has lapsed between the expiry of your last disc and the month in which you want to re-tax your vehicle.  If the vehicle was not in use for this period the Declaration of Non-Use at Section 7 on the RF100A must be witnessed at a Garda Station.


What documentation do I need to tax a new / imported vehicle, for personal use?

You need the following: (1) Form RF100 (from garage or If vehicle is imported form can be downloaded from NCT website or direct from NCT test centre, from 1st September 2010 it will no longer possible to register a vehicle at Revenue Vehicle Registration Office(VRO). Instead, the vehicle must be brought to an NCT Centre for registration if imported). (2) Confirmation of current Insurance details. (3) Fee. (4) When the vehicle has been taxed for the first time, a Vehicle Registration Certificate will then be issued to the owner by the Vehicle. (5) Registration Unit in due course. Note: The vehicle is due to be taxed from the first day of the month of it's registration with the Revenue Commissioners.


What documentation do I need to renew the tax on my Motorcycle ?

You need the following: (1) Form [ RF100A ], completed OR Computerised reminder [ Form RF100B ]. This is the reminder form received from the Vehicle Registration Unit approximately 2 weeks before the tax on the vehicle expires. (2) Confirmation of current Insurance details. (3) Registration Unit in due course.


What documentation do I need to tax my goods vehicle ?

You need the following: (1) Form [ RF100 ], completed. (2) Confirmation of current Insurance details. (3) Fee. (4) In certain circumstances, either a Certificate of Roadworthiness (required every year after once the vehicle is over 1 year old), weight docket, and a goods declaration form needs to be included with the application. (5) When the vehicle has been taxed for the first time, a Vehicle Registration Certificate will then be issued to the owner by the Vehicle Registration Unit in due course.


What documentation do I need to tax a Small Public Service Vehicle (SPSV), Taxis, Limousines etc.?

Small Public Service Vehicle Licences are categorised as Hackneys, Limousines, Taxis and Wheelchair Accessible Taxis. In each case the documentation for taxation is the same. You need the following: (1) Form [ RF100 ], completed. (2) Confirmation of current Insurance details. (3) Fee [ 82euro per annum ] (4) Current PSV Licence.


What documentation do I need to tax a new / imported Motorcycle ?

You need the following: (1) Form RF100 (from the garage for a new vehicle and If vehicle is imported form can be downloaded from NCT website or direct from NCT test centre, from 1st September 2010 it will no longer possible to register a vehicle at Revenue Vehicle Registration Office(VRO). Instead, the vehicle must be brought to an NCT Centre for registration), completed. (2) Confirmation of current Insurance details. (3) Fee. When the vehicle has been taxed for the first time, a Vehicle Registration Certificate will then be issued to the owner of the Vehicle.


I am selling a vehicle privately and it is registered on or after 1/1/1993. What do I need to do ?

You need to: Complete Part B of the Vehicle Licensing Certificate [ Form RF101 ] OR the reverse side of the Vehicle Registration Certificate must be signed by the seller and the new owner of the vehicle (date of sale should be stated) and sent to : The Vehicle Registration Unit, Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Shannon Town Centre, Co.Clare. Details of the Change of Ownership will be updated by the Vehicle Registration Unit. The new owner will then receive a Vehicle Registration Certificate in their own name in due course.


I am selling a vehicle to a motor dealer and it is registered on or after 1/1/1993. What do I need to do ?

You need to: Complete Part B of the Vehicle Licensing Certificate, [ Form RF101 ] OR the reverse side of the Vehicle Registration Certificate must be signed by the seller of the vehicle and given to the Motor Dealer. A Notification of Transfer of Vehicle Ownership to a Motor Dealer [ Form RF105 ] must also be signed by both parties and sent to : The Vehicle Registration Unit, Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Shannon Town Centre, Co.Clare. The Vehicle Registration Unit will temporarily transfer ownership of the vehicle to the Dealer until such time as the vehicle is sold on by them. In such circumstances the Dealer is not categorised as being a registered owner. When the vehicle is sold on by the dealer, the Vehicle Licensing Certificate or Vehicle Registration Certificate (where applicable) must be signed by the new owner and sent to the Vehicle Registration Unit (address above). The new owner will then receive a replacement Vehicle Registration Certificate in their own name in due course.


What documents do I need to tax a new / imported large public service vehicle (LPSV) ?

You need the following: (1) Form RF100 (from Garage if new vehicle, If vehicle is imported form can be downloaded from NCT website or direct from NCT test centre, from 1st September 2010 it will no longer possible to register a vehicle at Revenue Vehicle Registration Office(VRO). Instead, the vehicle must be brought to an NCT Centre for registration.) completed. (2) LPSV licence (Article 60 licence in the case of a school bus). (3) Certificate of Roadworthiness. (4) Confirmation of current Insurance details. (5) Fee. When the vehicle has been taxed for the first time, a Vehicle Registration Certificate will then be issued to the owner by the Vehicle Registration Unit in due course.


Under what circumstances do I need a Certificate of Roadworthiness ?

A Certificate of Roadworthiness is required for certain vehicles namely: (1) Mechanically propelled vehicles, registered for one year or more, used for the carriage of passengers with more than 8 seats, not including the driver e.g. a bus. (2) Goods vehicles, registered for one year or more.NOTE- Goods vehicles which are taxed privately also require a Certificate of Roadworthiness Once the vehicle is over ONE year old (3) Goods trailers, registered for one year or more, having an unladen weight exceeding 1,524 kilograms. (4) Ambulances, registered for one year or more. Note : If you do not have a current Certificate of Roadworthiness for a vehicle that would be included in any of the four categories listed above, you cannot tax the vehicle. You must have the vehicle tested by an Authorised Tester. A list of Authorised Testers in the Kildare area is available from your Motor Taxation Office.


I wish to change the name or address on my vehicle documentation. What do I need to do ?

If you hold a Vehicle Licensing Certificate or a Vehicle Registration Certificate for your vehicle, you should enter the details of your new name and/or address on the reverse side of this document and send it to : The Vehicle Registration Unit, Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government, Shannon Town Centre, Co. Clare. Your new details will be updated and the replacement Vehicle Registration Certificate will be sent to you outlining the changes in due course. If you hold a Registration (Log) Book for your vehicle you must send it to your local Motor Taxation Office together with a note detailing the change of name and/or address. Your details will then be updated and the Registration (Log) Book will be returned to you. Note in the case of a change of name, one of the following must also be submitted: (1) Marriage Certificate - if change of name is by marriage. (2) Birth certificate - if you are reverting to your maiden name. (3) Solicitor's Letter - if you are changing your name by deed poll.


I have changed the engine in my vehicle. What must I do to update my vehicle's documentation details ?

You need to : Complete a Change of Particulars [ Form RF111 ] and send it to your Local Motor Taxation Office together with one of the following, whichever is applicable: the Registration (Log) Book, the Vehicle Licencing Certificate, Vehicle Registration Certificate, For private vehicles, a letter from a garage confirming the serial number and size of new engine OR for goods vehicles, a weight docket confirming the weight of the new engine. For vehicles with Registration (Log) Books, the new details will be updated on this document by the Motor Taxation Office and returned to the owner. In all other cases an updated Vehicle Registration Certificate will be issued to the owner by the Vehicle Registration Unit in due course.


I've lost a document. How can I get a replacement ?

You need the following : (1) Application for Replacement Documents [ Form RF 134 ] declaring what document(s) have been lost and have this form witnessed and stamped by a member of the Garda Siochana. (2) Fee. The current replacement fees are as follows : Registration (Log) Book 12 euro, Vehicle Licensing or Registration Certificate 12 euro, Tax Disc 6 euro, Certificate of Roadworthiness (light) 6 euro, Certificate of Roadworthiness (heavy) 13 euro,
