Please note that from January 2009, Kildare County Council will charge €3 per car and €5 for car and trailer / van / 4x4. The only exception will be vehicles that are carrying electrical goods only as there can be no charge on these items. The charge is to offset the running costs of this facility and the Council has taken this step reluctantly to ensure the viability of the facility.

Recycling

As part of the ongoing improvements at Silliot Hill, the management is constantly on the lookout for new outlets for recycling products. Starting from a small base in 1998, when the only items collected here for recycling were glass bottles and scrap metal, the number of goods for recycling has increased considerably. The first markets were found for cardboard and newsprint, and, as these were bulky items, it was necessary to have storage bins provided by Smurfit Recycling Ltd. The customers were encouraged to use the proper bins, and when full, the cardboard was squashed down, using a mechanical shovel. This process was successful initially, but due to increased volumes of cardboard, a shed was built and a machine for baling installed. The operators now had a better handle on the cardboard, and could ensure that the bales were not contaminated with other items. Markets were found for other types of paper, including office paper, but to ensure confidentiality, a shredding machine was installed.

As there is only a limited market in Ireland for recycling, other outlets had to be sought throughout Europe. A home was found for plastics in Manchester, flat glass and tetra-pak in France, and electrical goods in Germany.

As the cost of recycling is so expensive, some of the items have to be charged for, at a reduced cost, which we hope will encourage people to continue to dispose of them in the correct manner, here at Silliot Hill.

Plastics

Due to a lack of recycling outlets in Ireland for plastics, only the following types will be accepted here; grades 1, 2, and 4. These may also appear on your plastic items as PETE, HDPE, or LDPE.

Any other plastics that do not carry these symbols or letters will not be accepted here at Silliot Hill for recycling, and unfortunately will be sent for landfill.

We suggest that when you are purchasing groceries etc, check the base of the container to see if it has the above symbols or letters. If so it is readily recyclable at Silliot Hill.

Inform your shopkeeper, and ask for packaging that is readily recyclable to be provided!

Glass Bottles & Jars

There are predominantly three colours of glass bottles – green, brown and white. On site, we have containers for each of these bottle colours, and the containers are clearly marked. To help with recycling of glass bottles, you should carry out the following:

  • Remove caps or corks from bottles.
  • Place bottles in the correct containers.
  • Do not leave any litter in the vicinity of the containers.
  • Place bags/boxes (used for transporting bottles) in the appropriate areas.
  • Do not leave bags/boxes of bottles on the ground – place in the containers.
  • Place only glass bottles in the containers – flat glass, ceramics and drinking glasses are not acceptable.
  • blue glass should be placed in the green glass container.

  • Site Requirements

It is a requirement of the EPA licence 14-1 that vehicles such as pickup trucks, trucks, skip lorries, and trailers, taking waste into or out of the site, be covered by either a net or a tarpaulin, and securely tied down. If  these vehicles are presented without a cover, we regret that we will have to refuse its entrance to the site, until such a time as it is covered adequately. It should also be noted that under this licence, the site is a no smoking zone.

    Facility Tours

As part of Kildare Co. Council's commitment to environmental education, school tours of Silliot Hill are available. For the past eight years, schools from all over Kildare and beyond have come to Silliot Hill to see first hand what happens to waste after the refuse is removed from outside your door.

The Waste Facility Manager conducts the tours which can consist of up to 40 pupils and teachers at any one time. The tour starts at the transfer station where pupils and teachers can witness the household refuse being deposited from the refuse truck and see for themselves the make up of the waste and the amount of recyclable material which could be recovered at source.

The pupils can then see the waste being loaded into large freighters for transporting to the Baleing Station in Dublin. They are informed about the baleing process and how the baled waste is then transported back to Kill in Co. Kildare for land filling in South Co. Dublin's facility at Arthurstown.

The next item on the agenda is the food and green waste composting which takes place on the site.

The pupils are shown the Vertical Composting Unit and how it operates. From there they are brought to the Electricity Generation Plant and the pupils learn how waste produces methane gas and this gas is used to fuel the Generator Set which makes the electricity which is fed to the National Grid.

The Pupils are then brought to the areas of recycling where they are shown the various items for recycling and told of their ultimate destinations.

The Tour then ends with a question and answer session where the pupils usually have a myriad of questions, which they want answered.

School Tours from Primary, Secondary and Third Level schools and colleges are welcomed here and should your school wish to avail of the opportunity to visit Silliot Hill Integrated Waste management Facility, please phone 045-482229.
