Adult_Literacy_pic1.jpg

According to the last international survey about half a million Irish adults have problems with basic reading, writing and maths. All over Ireland, lots of people are returning to learning and improving their reading, writing and maths. They are people who want to catch up on what they missed at school, parents who want to help children with their homework and those who would simply like to write a letter home. Whatever the reason for going back to learning, the benefits are always the same. Not only do people improve their old skills, but they also gain the confidence to learn new ones.

The main providers of adult basic education (ABE) support in Ireland are Vocational Education Committees (VEC) Adult Literacy Schemes. There are about 126 such Schemes throughout the country and each VEC employs an Adult Literacy Organiser (ALO) to organise ABE support in their local area.

Castledermot's Threshing & Vintage Working Day A Fantastic Success

Castledermot hosted its first vintage day on Sunday 23rd September 2007 on the Corcoran farm on the Tullow Road, Castledermot, Co. Kildare.

Mrs Sheila Galbally - centre - enjoys the threshing The event was in memory of Ann Hyland (née Corcoran) of Rosebran, Athy, (and formerly of St. Mels’, Walkinstown and Davidstown, Castledermot), who passed away from cancer on 4th July 2007. It was organised by her extended family and friends, the Corcorans, Hylands, and Horans, who wanted to fulfil Ann’s wish to have a threshing day on the farm where she grew up, and raise money for cancer care services in our local Kildare hospital in Naas.

It was Castledermot’s FIRST vintage day and it was a phenomenal success, raising over €22,000, which completely exceeded our expectations. For our first vintage day that was organised in the space of about six weeks, we are ecstatic about the large sum raised for the cancer care services in Naas Hospital (in particular we hope to buy special palliative care beds for cancer patients).

vintage steam engine The event kicked off on Saturday night, 22nd September with a parade of steam engines through the town of Castledermot and a benefit night in The Castle Inn, Castledermot, where there was a display of steam engines and the traditional steam-powered carnival organ playing, as well as music, barbeque and a raffle with some fantastic prizes. The threshing and vintage day on Sunday 23rd was a great success, with lovely weather and a fantastic turn-out on the day, with a huge crowd attending (in excess of 1000 people and over 150 vintage machines).

All the Fun of the Fair Everyone commented on how enjoyable the day was for the young and old, with a perfect traditional, informal, non-commercialised feel to the event. There were threshing machines in operation, several steam engines, and a huge display and parade of all sorts of vintage tractors, trucks, fire engines, cars, and so much more. Fan of vintage particularly enjoyed the parade of a wide array of vintage tractors, steam engines, trucks, fire engines, and cars.

Families had a great day out, with all the sideshows and stalls, the funfair, and lots of competitions, with the welly-throwing and sheaf-pitching competitions going down particularly well.

Winners of the sheaf-pitching were Joe Kehoe for the men’s and Eibhlin Haughney in the women’s competition. Seamus Corcoran won the men’s title for the welly-throwing competition and the Hyland families were particularly successful in the women’s and children’s welly-throwing with Miss Hyland of Ballyfoyle winning the women’s, and Bridget and Maura Hyland winning prizes in the children’s competition.

The event was a wonderful memorial to Ann Hyland, and a special day for the Corcoran and Hyland families, who were deeply touched by the fantastic support. There was a large contingent from Castledermot and Athy, and counties of Kildare, Carlow, Kilkenny, Dublin, Wicklow, Wexford, and further afield with some people travelling from as far as Louth and England to be there on the day.

The event is most definitely going to become an annual occurrence with everyone promising to return next year for an even bigger event. We would like to say a heart-felt “Thank You” to everyone for their support and hope that they will continue to support Castledermot Threshing and Vintage Working Day for years to come.

Thanks to all who helped organise the event and all who volunteered to help on the day. We want to thank all our sponsors, including Horans Maxol & Mace Service Station Castledermot, Walsh Civil Engineering, The Dales Pub Castledermot, The Castle Inn Castledermot, Woodies DIY, Kilkea Castle, Ramada Killerig, TopGifts.ie, Walshes Pub Killerig, Keatley Concrete, Bord na Mona, Deasy Photography Newbridge, Celtic Hampers, Curragh Golf Club, Athy Golf Club, Tom Kearney Construction Castledermot, John Horan & Sons, Anthony Quinn (QDC Builders Limited), and so many more who gave donations and prizes.

See you all again next year at Castledermot Threshing & Vintage Working Day.

Brides Online Now In Kildare

www.bridesonline.ie has just announced the addition of 10 County Kildare towns to the popular wedding website. Brides in Athy, Celbridge, Clane, Kilcock, Kildare, Leixlip, Maynooth, Monasterevin, Naas & Newbridge can now access a comprehensive list of local wedding suppliers for their wedding day.

The directory already caters for Athlone, Birr, Carlow, Carrick-on-Shannon,
Kilkenny, Longford, Mullingar, Portarlington, Portlaoise, Roscommon and Tullamore. From bridal wear to florists, videographers to photographers - a
wealth of wedding supplier information is available at the click of a mouse.

With the arrival of broadband in most areas nationwide and with less free
time on their hands, brides are increasingly turning to the internet to
research suppliers for their big day and Brides Online provides a service
which is proving useful to everyone involved in the wedding day. While
brides have found an ideal way to search for suppliers, the suppliers
themselves have found an ideal medium to advertise their services to the
brides on a local basis. The directory is unique in that brides can search
for suppliers in their own town or city rather than trying to find suppliers
from a list based on their county.

Having started 18 months ago just catering for Athlone, Brides Online has
expanded at a steady rate since then and now lists over 1,000 wedding
suppliers in 21 towns and cities with another 10 nationwide locations to be
added before the end of the year.

Mark White, a Software Engineer from Monkstown in Dublin, is Managing
Director of the company. "Our objective is simple in concept - nationwide
coverage. The reality should take another 2 years or so." says Mark, "The
quality of the information we provide is vital and this limits the expansion
rate while we research the market in each new town. This research strategy
guarantees we are creating the best possible directory service going
forward."

One of the unique features of Brides Online is an online gallery which is
updated on a weekly basis. No other online wedding directory provides this
service. Photographers and brides alike submit their photos for inclusion on
the gallery and 1 is chosen each week to be added to the live gallery. All
photos added in the past are also kept on the gallery. Brides are using the
gallery as a visual source of ideas for jewellery, hairstyles, bridal gown
fashions and even floral arrangements," says Mark, "As the saying goes, 'A
picture is worth a thousand words' and the Brides Online gallery is proving
just that. In addition to flicking magazine pages, brides are now also
clicking their mouse."

The Brides Online wedding directory can be found online at:
www.bridesonline.ie

The Waterless Carwash comes to Kildare

Local Kildare business man opens a Car Dry Cleaners that doesn't cost the Earth.

The waterless car wash in some areas is no longer revolutionary. But a waterless car cleaner that is 100% organic, totally Earth Friendly is sure to turn a few heads.

Already Governments, Public and Commercial sectors in 16 countries have heard of the benefits of NOWET, a patented product that Cleans, Polishes, Waxes and Seals any vehicle yet uses NO water, NO soap, NO detergents, NO hoses, NO sponges and NO buckets but cleans the inside and outside of your car with a system proven to be superior to traditional methods.

Pat Pender, a local Kildare businessman believes the unique product and service is the way of the future and has launched Ireland’s first GREEN “Car Dry Cleaners”, a mobile car wash that comes to your home, work or wherever you park your car.

“Water is one of our most precious resources and water conservation continues to become an increasingly important issue” he said, “A single car wash can send hundreds of litres of sudsy water into our drains. Just one litre of NOWET can clean up to 16 vehicles saving up to 3000 litres of water and can play a part in the solution to the pollution of our rivers and lakes”.

The 100% organic cleaning product used in the patented NOWET process is Non-toxic, Biodegradable, containing NO harmful chemicals, No silicone, No abrasives, No Petroleum distillates, NO Solvents, (so NO Pollution!).

Pat added, “We are pleased to state that it is V.O.C. Compliant and we know of no other product of it’s type that can make that claim. As the one product does the whole car, motorists can save time, money, water and the environment. Now Co. Kildare has a Car Dry Cleaners that doesn’t cost the Earth”.

.IE Domain Holders Beware

webtechnology01_200.jpg

The IEDR has issued a statement regarding a German Company, Internet Register Ireland, that is sending letters and faxes to .ie domain name holders offering them to register their domain name in their database for the excessive fee of €958.
This company will request you to fill out their form and return it to them signed.

The IEDR points out that no such organisation has been authorised to act on behalf of the IEDR. They recommend that you disregard this letter.

Kildare Web Services, a local .ie domain name Reseller, is advising its customers to disregard this letter and to be aware of this type of activity.

The IEDR recommend that .ie domain name holders should contact an official IE Reseller if they require any further Internet services for their website.

For more information visit the Irish Domain Registry website - www.domainregistry.ie

To purchase a .ie domain name or other web services contact Kildare Web Services - webservices@kildare.ie or visit their website - www.kildarewebservices.ie

IE Domain Registry Introduce Dot.ie Personal Domain Names

Irish Domain RegistryThe IE Domain Registry (IEDR), the managed registry for Ireland’s dot.ie domain names, has announced the relaxation of the rules for registering personal dot.ie domain names for individuals.

Registration of personal domains will be available to individuals from Wednesday, 31st October, 2007. This follows a seven week notice period, to allow time for sole traders, professionals, politicians, trademark holders who have not already registered their .ie Internet address, to do so under existing non-personal domain categories.

The introduction of personal dot.ie domain names is a result of the increased popularity of social networking and blogging sites and the increasing number of individuals who are coming online.

The registration of personal domain names will be open to all individuals who can authenticate a claim to the domain name and who have a real and substantive connection to the island of Ireland.

To authenticate a claim, a copy of an identification document is required, for example an Irish utility bill or driving licence. The name on the document supplied must match exactly the domain name applied for. This requirement ensures that
the status of Ireland’s dot.ie namespace, as the world’s second safest country code top level domain, is maintained and protected in the future. Applications will be time-stamped to ensure fairness and transparency of the process.

Commenting on the introduction of dot.ie personal domain names, Mr. David Curtin, Chief Executive of the IE Domain Registry said,

"The IEDR is pleased to announce the relaxation of rules for personal dot.ie domain names. To maintain the integrity of the dot.ie domain namespace, which has negligible levels of cyber squatting and cyber crime, applicants will need to authenticate their claim by providing matching supporting documentation such as an Irish passport or utility bill.

The broadband take-up and popularity of social networking has created a desire for a personal presence on the Internet, which in turn will have a positive effect on the level of demand for personal dot.ie domain names. The IEDR has also significantly reduced its prices, which have fallen by 50% since 2003 and introduced key system changes that facilitate fast, automated and real time registration, which has
reduced resellers’process costs.”

If you wish to register your own personal domain name contact Kildare Web Services as soon as possible to have your application ready before the official start date.

Formula Ford Racers Battle for Leinster Trophy

Formula Ford A bumper grid of Formula Ford's battling for the Leinster Trophy will be just one of many high points of this weekend's (22nd - 23rd Sept 2007) Leinster Motor Club event at Mondello park. The two day event is the annual highlight of the domestic racing season with not only the prestigious Leinster Trophy to be contested but also the final rounds of most of the Irish racing championships. The event time table is crammed with twenty four races that will in many cases decide the destiny of the 2007 national championship titles.

Formula Ford remains as the class chosen to fight for the top award with drivers looking to follow in the footsteps of some of the biggest names in world motorsport in adding their name to the Leinster Trophy roll of honour, which include Ayrton Senna and Mika Hakkinen. The regular Republic of Ireland championship contenders will be joined as usual by visitors from the Northern Irish championship and a handful of overseas drivers to produce the biggest Formula Ford grid of the year all looking to emulate teenager Kris Loane who took the title last September.

Of the other classes on the bill the Dunlop Supercar Championship is the one most likely to produce fireworks as current series leader and reigning champion Rod McGovern continue their race long battle for supremacy. Having led for most of the year McGovern has recently lost out to a late season charge by Whelan who has won four of the last five races to move into a fourteen point championship lead and make himself favourite to take his second title. While these two concentrate on the championship any one of half a dozen other drivers are capable of taking race victory so the two Supercar races should be some of the most competitive of the weekend.

All of the other Irish championships will be on the bill on either Saturday or Sunday, with the addition of a new saloon libre class which will run alongside the Dunlop Abarth Cup races. Also on the programme is the second of Mondello's new Sportscar Endurance races which feature two drivers per car, pit stops and refueling during their forty five minute duration.

Saturdays programme starts with qualifying and continues with nine races before finishing off with Supercar qualifying last thing on Saturday evening. Following Saturday's Formula Ford championship race the Leinster Trophy contenders will have an additional qualifying session for the Leinster Trophy feature race, which will be part of a busy fifteen race timetable.

Food Safety Authority Advises Parents About Food Colours

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has stated that it is aware of the UK study carried out in relation to the potential link between some artificial food colours and children’s behaviour. The results  of the study support the suggestion that consumption of some snack foods containing mixtures of certain food colours are associated with an increase in hyperactivity in some children. The FSAI has advised, that in light of these initial findings, parents of children in Ireland who could display symptoms of hyperactivity or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) should consider limiting their children’s consumption of food products containing these food colours.

The FSAI  has recommended that parents read food labels when buying products so that they can identify if they contain these food colours and thus, they can make an informed purchasing decision.

All additives used in a food or drink are required by law to be listed by either name or e-number on the product’s label. The artificial food colours examined in this study were;

Tartrazine (E102)

Ponceau 4R (E124)

Sunset Yellow (E110)

Carmoisine (E122)

Quinoline Yellow (E104)

Allura Red (E129)
