Brenda Kearney - The Great Work of Preserving

Brenda Kearney - The Great Work of Preserving

The show considers which processes, objects and ideas we seek to preserve, and why.

'I spend my time at the great work of preserving. Memory, as well as fruit, is being saved from the corruption of the clocks'

The Great Work of Preserving takes its title from a thesis of the same name, written last year to explore ideas of skill, knowledge and creativity in traditional food practices. It also asks how we consider and value this work - and how its value changes in the world at large.

This exhibition, a practical development of the thesis, takes a cosmos of ideas as starting points - the jumbled ethnographic museum, old obsessions with curiosity cabinets and collections, folk objects and folk crafts, and the ever-enduring appeal of edible stuff.

Through a variety of work (some edible), the show considers which processes, objects and ideas we seek to preserve, and why.

The official opening of The Great Work of Preserving will take place at 4pm on Saturday 1st September. All welcome.

The exhibition is supported by 2017 Kildare Arts Service and Riverbank Arts Centre Emerging Visual Artist Award
